Q: Sophia, tell us about your cannabis consumption ritual if you have one?
I usually partake in social settings, but I never do it on my own. Sometimes I find myself consuming when I'm among other creatives or when I'm chillin’ with my friends. But as far as other rituals for destressing, I usually will put my "spa" music as I'm getting ready for bed. It helps me get into my own world as I shut off from social media/answering emails, phone etc. I find it super necessary to do so. There's one playlist that I normally use on Spotify called "Musical Therapy" it's very soothing and therapeutic CHILL MODE PLAYLIST
Q: How does music go with your consumption ritual?
Music is very important when it comes to rituals. As a singer-songwriter, I pay attention to melodies a lot. Words also have a way of stimulating a certain area of the brain, so if I'm trying to focus or read, I would stay away from songs with words. Sometimes, I also run with slower tunes to help alleviate the stress that I'm putting in my body. Usually songs with an acoustic guitar with thin bright vocals help me run for a longer period of time as opposed to hard-hitting trap or hiphop songs that help me go into sprint/fight mode. These days I love listening to a mix of brazilian jazz/lo-fi beats when trying to be productive on my laptop.
Q: You are an incredibly talented musician yourself, what are some artists that influence you?
I listen to a lot of everything and write a variety of songs as well. Growing up, it was Pop ballads, Soul music, jazz, and pop, and classic rock (Celine Dion, Stevie Wonder, Ella Fitzgerald, Michael Jackson, Beyonce, The Beatles, BeeGees) In my college years, I got more into Gospel music, hiphop and RnB (Mary Mary, Kierra Sheard, Hezekiah Walker, Kirk Franklin, Frank Ocean, Jazmine Sullivan, Emily King, Ryan Leslie etc.) Between 2017 and now, I've gotten into more Afropop/dancehall music both as an artist and as a dancer. This is just to name a few. But I find myself channeling and tapping into different energies. I have a lot of respect for producers and audio engineers because great records really have a lot to do with the production.
Q: What things should we be on the lookout for from you?
Back in February, I released a single that's out on all platforms called "All In My Head" feat a dope producer and dancer Hitmakerchinx.
As of now, I'm finishing another single that is more geared towards visuals by the ocean. A song that I produced and wrote.
I also have a few collaborations with other artists that I'm excited about. More to come this summer for sure!
I also just started my show on IG live called "Sophia & Friends" where I interview artists, wellness experts, producers, DJ friends and have them share their businesses as well.
Everything will be announced through my IG live page (@sophia.islander) so STAY TUNED!
